The Next Thing for Cloth Diapers?

I've been starting to prepare for show season -- the time of year through spring and summer when we at Two Little Whales and Punkernoodle Baby do green and baby shows. It's a fun time, because we get to talk to lots and lots of new and about-to-be parents about cloth diapers and other green parenting issues. We sell diapers at shows, but the much more important goal is education and advocacy. Some parents have heard about cloth diapering and want to know how much money they can save, or they want to get into the nitty gritty about carbon footprints (fun!!), or they simply want to put their hands on a modern cloth diaper and see what's out there beyond flat cotton and plastic pants (so much!!). Other parents had never even considered cloth, and they leave a show committed to use it after talking to and learning from us. SO COOL!

And thinking about show season got me thinking about what's next for cloth diapers? Cloth diapering has been going mainstream the past few years, and now you can even find a couple brands in big discount stores and groceries (though no one there to help you use, care for and troubleshoot with them).

So what is next? Pocket diapers have become soooo popular, and most companies over the past 18 months have crowded into the one-size diaper market. There's still room for innovation on that front -- room to solve common problems like Velcro wear, bulk, newborn sizing, and stink issues. But is that the end of the trend? The last stop on the diaper train?

I don't think so. One thing I wonder about is how to move the discussion and use of cloth diapers into even more environmentally friendly ground. I love that more and more parents are choosing cloth instead of disposables filled with chemical gels, which do not decompose in our landfills and take precious resources -- and a lot of pollution -- to produce.

But if I am honest with myself, I can see that most modern cloth diapers are not perfect in terms of their impact on the planet. Or for the health of our babies, perhaps.

Cloth diapering has been made so easy because of fabrics like PUL (polyurethane laminate), which keeps leaks in, comes in adorable colors and prints, and can withstand years of home washing routine.

But many modern cloth diapers are still manufactured with chemicals, contain plastic and synthetic materials such as polyester, and DO have an impact on our carbon footprint with regard to manufacture. These fabrics have been found to be perfectly safe for babies! Cloth diapers are now tested more stringently than ever in the U.S. under the new CPSIA law. Parents should feel as secure putting their child in a PUL pocket diaper or cover as they do putting on a nighttime fleece sleeper. But are they the best for our planet? The health of our Earth also impacts the health of our children!

Ideally, in my opinion, the safest, most environmentally and health conscious diapers are of natural fibers harvested organically, safely, either in the U.S. for a lower transportation impact, or elsewhere but still with strict oversight to make sure that the natural resources are being harvested ethically, fairly and greenly, and that they are being replenished. And that those harvesting and making diapers are being paid fairly and treated humanely.

This means organic cotton diapers, hemp or bamboo harvested in the right way, and wool covers, preferably organic wool.

Can most parents get hip to that? I don't know. It's a mental jump, one that we should be making when considering the source of all our fibers, not just diapers. Sure, a cotton diaper and wool cover might not be as "easy" or self-explanatory as a PUL one-size pocket with a polyester inner. But it has great benefits -- less chance of stink, possibly more economical, simple, customizable, easy to clean.

And, most likely, better for our planet. Food -- or fiber -- for thought.

Wet Happened Stocked!

We just stocked some adorable new prints of Wet Happened wet bags in the shop. I LOVE these wet bags! As a first-time cloth diapering mom, I originally thought they were just for carrying my baby's dirty diapers in when I was out and about. It's true, they are great for that - I actually have kep 2 bags with me in my diaper bag, one for clean cloth diapers and the other to put dirty ones in once I do a diaper change. The bags come in Medium and Large, are waterproof and smell-proof, and I love how they keep the diaper bag neat and organized...

But now I've discovered that these Wet Happened wet bags are good for SO MANY more things than just carrying dirty cloth diapers! I use one for our swimsuits when we go to the pool - I just wring out the suits after the kids are out of them and through them into the wet bag. I use the small sized wet bags to organize toys and crayons and even snacks when we're on the go. I pack a little one with activities for each kid before heading out to a restaurant or to somewhere boring like the doctor's office.

My husband even uses one for his stinky gym clothes after he runs on his lunch break at work. And I use one for my yoga class. And finally, when my daughters got new dolls for the holidays, I bought one from the shop to stuff all the tiny doll clothes in - they know that when they're done playing with all those little dresses and booties, into the wet bag they go. I think I might be a little addicted to them :) I just adore the gorgeous modern prints and how clean and neat they keep everything. Plus, because they are made for use with cloth so they just last and last no matter how many times I wash it or how hard we abuse it!

What Are The Best Newborn Cloth Diapers?

Occasionally I will write a post here answering a common customer questions I get at the shop. Today a very nice young couple came in looking for information about cloth diapers in preparation for their newborn, expected in about a month. They were a typical Seattle couple - very hip and cool looking, with their first baby due practically any moment yet exhibiting a relaxed certainty about wanting to use cloth. Oh, and they knew very little about the many styles of diapers they have to chose from. And did I mention how relaxed and not stressed they were?!

I took them through the range of modern cloth diapers. They asked some good questions. Then, when we had gotten to the end of the official tutorial, the dad-to-be asked me what, if I had another baby right now, would I pick for my newborn?

Tough question, but a good one. From my perspective, the two easiest, safest, most cost-effective cloth diaper systems for newborns right now are 1) Prefolds and covers (preferably Thirsties Duo Wraps) or 2) A set of Fuzzi Bunz One-Size Pocket Diapers.

Chinese prefolds are often the go-to diaper for newborns because they are cheap (less than $1.75 for a newborn diaper when you buy a package). This means you can afford a big stack, and that comes in handy when that precious little bundle needs 12-15 diapers a day (no, I am not lying). You can buy a 36-pack of newborn prefolds for $57.25 - around the cost of 1 pack of disposables! And prefolds are pretty simple - just fold in three and lay inside a good cover (you don't usually need complicated folds or fasteners for newborns). And because your newborn pees and poops so often, you will change them frequently anyway so the absorbency level of a cotton prefold is fine.

The key to success with prefolds is to have good covers! You need to keep explosive messes in, where they belong. Soooo...you need double leg gussets! Thirsties Duo Wraps are a fabulous waterproof newborn cover: Size 1 adjusts from XS to Small so it fits from birth to about 9 months old, giving you a good bang for your buck. You can use each wrap for about 3 changes before you They are super light and pliable, so no loud crunching noises during changes to wake up your sleeping newborn in the middle of the night. They are breathable, soft, easy to Velcro closed and have a nice cut-out for the umbilical stump.

Thirsties Duo Wraps also work beautifully on top of a Thirsties Fab Fitted in XS if you want to get a superb diaper with a little more absorbency than a prefold, along with a Velcro closure and elasticized legs. Thirsties Fab Fitteds have an amazingly cozy fit for newborns and really hold everything in. Plus the fleece lining keeps that new butt nice and dry!

Then, on the other end of the diapering spectrum, is the Fuzzi Bunz One-Size. There are so many reasons why I think this is a fabulous newborn cloth diaper. First, it adjusts from birth to potty-size through an elastic in the leg gusset (plus one across the back of the diaper), thereby avoiding the extra bulk a lot of other one-size diapers have when they adjust with rise snaps. These are one of the few one-size diapers that actually fit a newborn! I love the snaps on this diaper because they last forever and look so clean and neat. The fleece lining keeps baby's skin dry, cutting down on rashes for babies with sensitive skin (like mine). After you get into the habit of stuffing the pocket as soon as your diapers come out of the laundry, it is so simple to just pull a clean Fuzzi Bunz from the waiting stack and put it on. And in terms of cost, if you sit down and crunch the numbers, you will save a ton of money with these because you will buy one set and use it the whole time your child is in diapers! It costs $538 for a 30-pack of Fuzzi Bunz One Pocket Diapers (a 2.5 - 3-day supply). That's the same cost as 5 months of disposables, for 3+ years of cloth!!

So there you have it, my top Newborn recommendations. As you build your stash, you will add things that can make diapering even easier and more versatile, but these are the good bones you can begin with.

My Favorite Cloth Diapers...

After 4 years of cloth diapering, it is so hard to list my favorite diapers, although customers ask me this all the time. It's probably the most common question I get asked!

With the grand re-opening of Two Little Whales, and some of the changes we've been making and thinking about, I've been mulling favorite cloth diapers quite a bit...

I'm thrilled to say that at Two Little Whales, 3 of my all-time favorites will be stocked in both singles and packages regularly: Fuzzi Bunz One-Size Pocket Diapers, Knickernappies OneSize Diaper and Bottombumpers!

My affair with Fuzzi Bunz goes way back to the birth of my first daughter - their sized diapers were the first cloth diapers we ever used! I loved how trim they fit, and the bulletproof absorbency they offered us. With the release of the newest version of their One-Size pocket in 2009, Fuzzi Bunz did what I thought wasn't possible -- made their diaper better! This diaper truly fits birth-potty (it gets down tiny for newborns) and avoids the added bulk of many one-size diapers by adjusting through an ingenious leg elastic with buttons, instead of with a snap-down rise. Knickernappies Onesize is one of the best new diapers to come out recently. You can tell already that I love snap cloth diapers. Well, I really really love side-snap diapers! Side snap for baby is like a good pair of jeans for mommy: it trims, it snugs, it just creates that lovely little flat front that fits well into your cute baby clothes. This diaper just looks great on, and the snug fit keeps everything in where it belongs. I also adore Knickernappies loopy-do and super-do night inserts (gotta love that hemp) and those pair perfectly with the OneSize.

Finally, Bottombumpers are one of my favorite ways to get a perfectly sized fit AND the fun of a unique custom option -- embroidery! I indulged in some of these All-in-Ones because I wanted to mix and match my snap color and diaper color and create a one-of-a-kind cloth diaper by adding embroidery. I fell in love not only with the look but with the amazing fit and absorbency of Bottombumpers' organic cotton lining and snapi-in soaker topped with bamboo velour. I now love their simple solids colors, too -- the perfect nighttime and daytime cloth diaper.

Hello friends of Two Little Whales!

My name is Natalie, and I am so happy to say that I, along with my husband and two little girls, am the new owner of Two Little Whales. In this post I want to introduce myself as well as mention some of the plans - including NEW PRODUCTS! - for Two Little Whales.

Rachel is practically a neighbor of mine - my family lives in Seattle. I am a work-at-home-mom and run another diaper shop, Punkernoodle Baby, which I opened about 2 years ago. I feel strongly that as parents we should do everything we can to leave a clean planet for our children, and I consider it my privilege to help address environmental problems by spreading the word about cloth diapers. My hubby is green to the core, and I learn a little bit more every day about how to leave a better footprint on our Earth.

I also know what it's like to raise a family on a limited income, and I am passionate about cloth diapering because it saves parents so much money - money that can better put to use elsewhere. I truly believe if every parent in America just tried cloth diapering, we would have a major shift and disposables would be out of business!

Now about Two Little Whales. What a beautiful little shop! I plan to continue the wonderful customer service and personal help and caring Rachel has put into her store all this time - helping parents is one of the most satisfying things for me. You can expect to see most policies and approaches stay exactly the same!

I plan to continue carrying most of the products in Two Little Whales as well as add some exciting new ones. Look for one of the most-loved diaper brands, and one that I have used faithfully with both my girls, to be stocked for our grand re-opening in the next couple of weeks: Fuzzi Bunz!!!

I also plan to add the most economical diapering option of all - prefolds - and Thirsties covers and Duo Wraps to match.

By now, some loyal customers are into the potty-learning stage, so we will be adding some great cloth trainer options, including Snap EZ training pants.

I also have a personal addiction to wool, so I plan to add some wonderful wool products as well, to help keep babies snug in winter and stretch your dollars even farther.

Our very first washing machine is on the fritz and would cost over $300 to repair!

We went out this morning to take advantage of the Memorial Day sales & special military discounts.

After much debate we ended up getting a front loader. If you are looking for new appliances in Columbus, GA I recommend Lowe's. After shopping around I found that some of the other nearby stores ahem where 1) coming down on the price as we walked out - what is this a car dealership or flea market 2) didn't really know much beyond what we could read ourselves on the machines. The gentlemen at Lowe's was so helpful!

I have only used front loaders while visiting family so this is pretty new. Though after helping so many troubleshoot their own issues I should survive.

I have to run before Chris sees me blogging about the new machine while his hands prune up from wringing out the sopping wet laundry (that the washer just finished "spinning" out).

I'll update on the joy of cloth diapers in a front loader the next couple days!

Traveling With Cloth Diapers

QUESTION: Can you travel with cloth diapers?

ANSWER: Speaking from experience, YES!

As long as you have laundry facilities available while you are away from home, it is completely reasonable to cloth diaper on the road and flying. If you are taking a 2-3 day trip without laundry facilities and have enough diapers I say go for it!

We have used cloth diapers on 2 trips to Disney World and two trips from Georgia to New England to visit family (both driving and flying).

Both times we drove to Disney World which takes us about 8 hours. I just make sure I put Allie in nap-worthy diapers in the car since she will nap sporadically and tends to drink a lot in the car.

The first time was very easy because we had a washer/dryer in our suite. It was really no different then being at home!

During our last trip over Thanksgiving I had to use the hotel's laundry center. This wasn't as convenient, but not a burden by any means. I only ran into one problem in the laundry facility dryer temperature (see below).

When we travel to some place where we have direct access to a washer (in the house, or inside the hotel room) I use a Doorknob Diaper Pail since it is perfect for travel. Otherwise I load up wet bags and then tote them inside the doorknob pail or a Wahmies Pail Liner when I am ready to wash.

Take plenty of wet bags! These are great for storing the diapers each day. I would go to the theme parks with a clean bag. Once we went back to the hotel I would use that bag to store any diapers I changed while we were in the room and just stuffed it to the max! Then, I would grab a new bag for our next outing. By the time I washed diapers I had 2 large wet bags and 3 medium size wet bags jam packed with diapers and wipes.

We have also survived 2-3 day drives from Georgia to New England in cloth. I do the same thing with the wet bags, but put the wet bags right into a pail liner so they are not floating all over the car. I try to wash once on the road and wash day 2 and 3 diapers upon arrival.

I traveled alone by plane with Connor and Allie over Spring Break [insert panic smiley]. Once again, we used cloth the entire trip. Even with the first day being VERY long, we did just fine with the cloth diapers. Between the drive to Atlanta, crazy delays, the flight and drive from Boston to Cape Cod we were on the go for 12 hours and 45 minutes! Again, I was using nap worthy diapers on Allie. I also put her in a night time diaper before the drive to Cape Cod since it was so late I knew she would fall asleep.

My carry-on was packed to the brim with my laptop, 6-8 diapers diapers, wet bags, change of clothing and miscellaneous items! Connor had a backpack with his essentials and we all managed to survive the trip without incident! Allie's cloth diaper suitcase had about 24 diapers, the wipes, doorknob pail, wipes solution (I forgot their bath wash so I used Baby Bum Drop which worked out great!), changing pads, and wet bags! This is the before pictures! It didn't get repacked nearly as neat!

I washed every 2-3 days of our trip. Again, I brought my own detergent and plenty of wet bags.

We didn't have any problems and I was so glad to have Allie in her cloth diapers the entire trip.

WARNING: If you are using public laundry facilities you may NOT want to use the highest heat on the dryers. Being in a hurry to wash the diapers I put everything into the dryer at Shade of Green during our November trip. I checked it a few times so I could get back to the room and found the temperature to be WAY hotter than my dryer at home. I later found that a couple snap diapers that became damaged in the high heat for some reason ~ the snaps don't quite snap into tightly into place anymore. :(

I'll be sure to update in June after we make the 2700 mile drive from Georgia to Washington State...in cloth!

These do require an insert for absorbency which is not included. We mostly use 2G Loopy Do inserts in them, but I have yet to try an insert that doesn't fit.

I rarely deviate from our no fail bedtime diapers, but she has successfully made it through the night wearing the Rocky Mountain One Size Diaper with a Super Do! Even with sleeping almost 12 hours with the insert pretty well saturated the super soft suede cloth kept her feeling dry.!

Sometimes I wish I could just stick my little peeps in a bubble (an organic cloth bubble of course) to keep them safe from the ever going list of dangerous products they are exposed to.

While I feel that using cloth diapers is a big step in the right direction, I know we can do so much more to ensure that we are providing our children the best chance for a healthy life. But, where to start? What is most important?

Bottombumpers All In Ones are a high quality, trim fitting, easy to use cloth diaper.

This is an awesome diaper for those looking for natural fibers on a baby's bottom without compromising convenience!

They are made with a waterproof outer of 2 mil PUL, an inner layer of organic cotton and a 4 layer organic cotton snap in soaker topped with Organic Bamboo Velour.

The side snaps (everyone knows I LOVE LOVE LOVE side snapping diapers) make them very adjustable to fit a wide side range. Allie is in larges right now, but can also fit into mediums (at 22lbs/2 years old).

This is often the diaper I recommend for babies with chunky thighs because the fit is so gentle, but they also fit Allie's little thighs.

"This is without a doubt the trimmest-fitting diaper I've ever tried, and I have tried a LOT of diapers on my daughter! She is tall and skinny and fits well into both the medium and large sizes. I did try this diaper on her when she was 9 months old and liked it but at the time decided to go in the pocket direction instead. That was a size medium at 9 months, and she STILL fits into the medium now at 20 months!

My first impression when I saw the BB was how well-made it is. This is very high-quality and looks good wash after wash. I have had people comment on just how nice it looks.

My daughter has crazy fabric issues and gets rashes easily with fleece and other man-made materials, and this diaper has been a lifesaver for us. Because of the natural cotton on the inside, this is THE diaper that we use for car trips and errands because my daughter is comfortable in them. And another bonus with all-natural fabrics to absorb all the yuckiness is that they don't harbor any smells like fleece sometimes does.

The snap-in insert is very absorbent and if I know we'll be out for awhile I'll slip in a kissaluvs booster, which fits perfectly between the layers of the insert, but I do know that Bottombumpers makes their own doublers as well. Even with the kissaluvs booster, they are still really trim.

This is a REALLY nice diaper - oh yes, and it dries quickly too! I am hard-pressed to come up with any cons for Bottombumpers because they are so well-made and fit for so long! Cloth Diapering at Daycare or Preschool

At least once a week I read about others struggling to convince their day care provider to use cloth diapers on various diaper forums. When I wanted to enroll Allie in Connor's school two mornings this school year a BIG concern was that she would be able to wear her cloth diapers.

When I asked the Director she immediately said yes - no hesitation. WOW! Did she hear me correctly when I said cloth diapers? I didn't even mention how easy our diapers are to use! I think she was expecting prefolds with pins and covers. Of course, she would not be the one changing Allie each day she was there. ;)

When we went to the Open House in August I mentioned it to her teachers and they were on board as well! I showed them the Thirsties Pocket All In One just so they could see that they were not going to struggle with pins to diaper Allie. Thirsties are designed to go on just like a disposable diaper, but are of course better! They are trim fitting, have velcro tabs and leg gussets. The optional pocket opening allows us to add extra absorbency. I typically add Just Hemp, Thirsties Hemp, or a Fab Doubler when we need to boost the absorbency of Thirsties.

Perhaps I lucked out in that this is a small Church preschool and she is only there for 3 hours two mornings per week. If your provider says no to cloth diapers before seeing them I would recommend doing a quick intro to the new age of cloth. I have not had a single complaint from Allie's teachers on her diapers. The Director substituted in her class one day and even commented on how nice "Allie's britches were!"

The diapers I pack in Allie's preschool bag are those that fit her best, offer good absorbency and are simple for those not used to cloth diapers to use. I avoid the one size diapers, just because if you are not familiar with them you might wonder what you are doing with all the extra snaps! I want this to be easy on her teachers. Mums Bums are a super absorbent All In One diaper and those tend to end up in her school bag as well as Thirsties Pocket All In Ones and Knickernappies. I read about those who think they need to send All In Ones and only velcro diapers to daycare. As long as your pockets are stuffed, the provider will not need to do anything differently so I see now reason not to use pockets too. There is at least one Knickernappies to choose from in her bag each school day. That is often the diaper they change her into even with other options being velcro. She may end up with a different diaper in her bag on occasion, but I do tend to stick with these three. Allie has every diaper at Two Little Whales in her stash, but these three diapers are in the top 3 as far as quantity per brand.

When we leave the house I put a hemp doubler in if she is wearing a pocket and usually stuff hemp in the extras as well since the morning is her heavy wetting/power wetting time. I also pack two regular size wet bags. She really only needs to be changed once her 3 hours at school, but just in case she has a messy diaper I want them to have a separate bag to put it in because I don't think they would appreciate having to do back into a stinky wet bag with the next diaper (and it makes unloading the bag after school less of a mess).

I have often read how providers want individual wet bags for each diaper. That can get to be quite expensive, so I would try for one large wet bag and then maybe a few small ones like Wahmies Small Wet Bag (suitable for one diaper) for those diapers needing special containment. ;) For those daycares that claim this is unsanitary, I recommend bringing up the point of how this is no more unsanitary then when a child has an accident or a disposable diaper blowout or leakage. Allie has not once had to have her clothing changed due to a diaper leaking at preschool.

I started sending cloth wipes as well (premoistened in a mini or small Wahmies wet bag), but the preschool provides wipes and the teacher's seem to prefer those. I'm just glad they were open to cloth and if she has gets wiped with 4 disposable wipe a week I really can't complain.

Thrifty Tuesday: Using Cloth Wipes

When I first researched cloth diapers for my son and saw cloth wipes online I didn't even consider buying them. I LOVED my disposable wipes. For bottoms, hands, faces and even wiping down baseboards they were great, even if I was buying an $8 box every two weeks.

Aside from the obvious savings, I started to see the reasons why cloth diapering families went to cloth wipes.

Stopping off at the trash on the way to the diaper pail is a hassle and also stinks up the trash.
I got tired of washing disposable wipes left in the cloth diaper.
Like disposable diapers, disposable wipes have lots of chemicals in them.

According to Thirsties, the maker of Fab Wipes, the average household will spend $800 on disposable wipes from birth to potty training (based on an average of 3 boxes per week at $2.50).

For $50 you can get enough cloth wipes to last 2-3 days between washing depending on your baby's age.

I got some cute wipes (yes, they are fun just like diapers) and soon the days of buying boxes of disposable wipes were over. This also reduced my little guy's exposure to chemicals and reduced waste.

We have all had those diaper changes that required wipe after wipe...4, 5, 6 or even 7 wipes to get the job done! Cloth wipes can tackle the same job with 1-2 wipes. Rather than moving the mess around the fabric actually grabs it right off that little bottom.

Wiggly Wipes are made by another cloth diapering Mama/Army Wife who I met here at Fort Benning.

These awesome 2 layer wipes are made from cute flannel prints and coordinating sherpa. They are ready to tackle any diaper change!

I recommend having one wipe per diaper change and then an extra set for those that require a second wipe.

Nighttime cloth diapering with pocket diapers

Most cloth diapering newbies are apprehensive to use cloth diapers at night. I know this because I was one of them! It can take a bit of trial an error, but I promise you it can be done even for heavy wetting babies.

Once you find a good fitting diaper and appropriate absorption for your baby you will no longer cringe as you pick you little one up *hoping* you will not have a sopping wet baby and sheets to change.

The best night time diapers for my children have been pocket diapers with a combination of microfiber and hemp inserts. Microfiber absorbs quickly and hemp holds a lot. They make a great combination with hemp below the microfiber when stuffed in a pocket diaper. Because most pockets have stay dry inner materials your baby not feel wet during the night which can often cause waking or irritation.

What's on Allie's bottom at bedtime?

We use any of the following at bed time:

DryBees Nighttimes Fleece Pockets - Stuffed with a Super Do insert, or microfiber and hemp inserts

Fleece is bulkier than PUL, but it offers more breathability than PUL. This is a heavy weight waterproof fleece which differs from the inner fleece used on many diapers. DryBees Fleece are often the solution for super heavy wetters. Honestly, I was scared Allie would wake up soaked when she wore this. Nope! She did just fine. ~ trust in the fleece! I do not recommend using a onesie with fleece diapers, or snug fitting cotton pajamas. You will likely end up with compression wicking and the wetness will go right to the cotton. There is plenty of room to stuff multiple inserts, but I usually opt for Super Do because the diaper itself is already bulky so I don't want to add to that more than necessary and Super Do is definitely trimmer than multiple inserts of comparable absorbency. Lately Allie has become a super super soaker so if she is sleeping 12 hours I have been adding Just Hemp below the Super Do for extra absorbency.

Knickernappies with Loopy Do and Just Hemp OR Super Do

Both of these combinations usually suffice for Allie and she sleeps 10-12 hours each night. If she has had a lot to drink in the evening I will add Just Hemp below the Super Do. She may not need it, but I am not one for a wet baby in the morning!

DryBees Hybrid AIO with a hemp insert

DryBees Hybrid AIO is a great diaper day or night for us. The optional pocket opening in the back allows for stuffing of most any insert. I will stuff this with one or two Just Hemp, or a multi-layer hemp insert and have no worries that Allie will wake up wet. One hemp has always been fine, but if she drinks a lot or is going through a heavy wetting time I will add another just in case.

May 2009 Edited to add: A new diaper in the mix for nighttime!

Rocky Mountain Diapers with Super Do inserts have been working great and the stay dry
inner is AWESOME! Allie has been so dry waking up with these I questioned whether she had wet at all and found that the insert was pretty well saturated. These rock for bedtime in our home!

Knickernappies One Size diaper with a Super Do, or 2G Loopy Do and Just Hemp is our current #1 pick. Allie has really slimmed down in the waist but is getting bigger in the thighs and these are just the perfect fit and function for nighttime right now!

The keys to nighttime diapers for us are:

reliable, good fitting pocket diaper (or stuffable AIO)

stay dry inner material (suedecloth or microfleece)

microfiber

hemp

TIPS:

Do not over stuff your pockets! Over stuffing a pocket diaper can often lead to leaking right out the thighs because you create a gap with the extra stuffing.

If you have a tummy sleeping girl, or a baby boy make sure you choose a diaper with a generous rise for extra coverage up front.

Folding hemp inserts can be used to double up coverage in the area where you baby wets the most when sleeping.

I hope this encourages you to use cloth diapers at night!

Will other diapers work? Absolutely. These are just our no worries bedtime diapers.

I'm Rachel, the owner of Two Little Whales, an online retail store offering cloth diapers, baby carriers, eco-friendly products, baby & children's room decor, gifts, gear & more! My husband is in the Army and I work from home while caring for my two little people - Connor (4.5) and Allie (19 months). We live in Columbus, Georgia (Fort Benning) for now and will likely move to the Army's choice location mid 2009!
